Every costume tells the audience something before the actor speaks.
Costume Design Studio is a hands-on design studio where students learn by drawing, designing, revising, and creating. Each class begins with a demonstration and Studio Sketch Session before students apply new concepts to their own costume renderings during extended Creative Studio Time. Throughout the process, students receive individualized feedback, revise their work, and strengthen their designs through thoughtful artistic decisions.
Students learn to design from observation rather than imagination alone by collecting visual references, studying clothing on the human form, and exploring how color, pattern, texture, silhouette, and fabric choices communicate character. They also learn to think like costume designers by considering construction methods, fabric and trim availability, and how artistic vision must work alongside practical production needs.
The course concludes with a professional costume design presentation featuring up to three fully developed costume renderings. Students may choose to design three different characters or explore one character at three significant moments in the story, demonstrating how costume design supports character development throughout a production.
The Creative Mind Costume Design Method
Students approach costume design through four creative habits.
Observe: Study the script, the character, and real-world references before drawing.
Imagine: Explore ideas through Studio Sketch Sessions, research, and creative experimentation.
Design: Develop costume renderings that communicate character through color, silhouette, texture, pattern, and thoughtful artistic choices.
Refine: Receive ongoing instructor feedback, revise designs, and strengthen every artistic decision before presenting the final concept.
