Purpose

Students deepen their watercolor and ink skills while learning to interpret landscapes through observation, planning, and intentional artistic choices. Through Studio Sketch Sessions, Creative Studio Time, and individualized critique, students explore the unique challenges of water and mountain landscapes while developing a repeatable process they can apply to their own artwork.

A landscape is more than a collection of mountains, trees, water, and sky.

Landscape Studio helps experienced artists move beyond simply reproducing a reference image to making intentional choices about what a painting needs. Students learn to identify the essential shapes, values, colors, lines, and atmospheric relationships within a landscape before deciding what to emphasize, simplify, or leave behind.

Working in watercolor and ink, students explore how transparent color and expressive linework can work together to communicate light, movement, depth, texture, and a sense of place. Watercolor establishes atmosphere and color, while selective ink linework can define forms, introduce texture, create visual rhythm, and guide the viewer through the composition.

Each class includes a Studio Sketch Session where artists experiment with techniques, study visual problems, and test ideas before applying them to their larger work. During extended Creative Studio Time, students develop their paintings while receiving individualized instructor feedback, critique, and support.

Over eight weeks, students complete two landscape paintings: a water landscape focused on reflection, movement, and the relationship between water and sky, followed by a mountain landscape focused on depth, atmosphere, scale, and natural texture. Rather than creating identical instructor-led paintings, students work from selected references and develop individual interpretations of each landscape.

The Creative Mind Landscape Method

Observe: Study the landscape before painting. Identify major shapes, values, light, color relationships, atmosphere, and visual movement.

Explore: Use Studio Sketch Sessions to experiment with composition, watercolor techniques, color, texture, and ink before applying those decisions to the larger artwork.

Plan: Develop thumbnail compositions, value studies, and color notes to establish a strong foundation for the painting.

Paint: Build the landscape through intentional washes, brushwork, layering, color relationships, and expressive mark making.

Define: Introduce ink thoughtfully to establish selected edges, textures, details, movement, and visual emphasis without overpowering the watercolor.

Refine: Evaluate what the artwork needs, strengthen the focal point, adjust values and edges, and make thoughtful final decisions without overworking the piece.

Recommended For

Adults with previous drawing or painting experience who want to deepen their landscape painting skills and explore the relationship between watercolor and expressive ink drawing. Students should be comfortable with basic color mixing, value, composition, and watercolor techniques. Completion of Foundations of Art and Color Theory is recommended but not required. Artists with equivalent experience are welcome.
